ABOUT US
Retro Remakes is, in case you hadn’t got that far in working stuff out, about Retro Remakes. What are Retro Remakes I hear you inquire?
Well, allow me to try and answer that question. The general concept of a Retro Remake is to bring classic games up to date for modern hardware. Remember Jet Set Willy, perchance? Have you ever wondered what it’d be like if someone took the original game and gave it a lovely more modern graphical overhaul? Wonder no longer – Andy Noble has done a sterling job on it. Or perhaps, what if someone added network play to the game and created a mass multiplayer version? Wonder no longer – Ovine, Auld Games, Smila and Mersey Remakes all got together to do just that.
You see, that’s precisely what Retro Remakes is about. Taking an old game, sometimes long forgotten, sometimes popular and updating it. It’s the sort of thing that can only really, truly be done for the love of it. You’d have to be crazy otherwise.
THE SITE
And Retro Remakes, the site? Well, we’ve been around a long time now, in many shapes and forms over the years. We’ve got the big boss man [JJ] to thank for starting the ball rolling, The Toker (RIP) for carrying the flame for many years afterwards and now, Retro Remakes is in the hands of the current admin team. It’s been 3 years now since the hand over and we’re still plugging away and still loving everything we do.
The site exists to provide a community for Retro Remakers, the good folks who dedicate their time to creating these games. It exists to get their work out there to the public. It exists for you, the public to find, discover and enjoy retro remakes. For you to talk directly to the people who make them or to just download and have some fun. We’ve even got a couple of authors lurking about the place whose games you might just have played in the eighties and some folks whose games you’re playing now. Retro Remakes is for developers and the public, all comers welcomed.
FREEWARE
All the remakes featured on Retro Remakes are freeware. We believe, sincerely, that it’s nobody’s business to profit from the hard work of others. In this case, the original authors and/or rights holders of the game without whom we wouldn’t have these games in the first place. We encourage remakers wherever possible to try and obtain permission for their remakes and for the remakers to respect the rights of the original authors.
Those seeking to profit from clones, remakes or similar in principle may steer clear. This is not the site for you.
On the admittedly rare occasions we do feature shareware remakes, they're created either by the original authors or with the blessing of the original authors.
ACCESSIBILITY
Retro Remakes is also proud to support the cause of furthering accessibility in gaming. Through a series of competitions the denizens of Retro Remakes have created the best part of 100 One Switch games, a number of eminently accessible games in many different ways and even helped contribute to the worthy Game For Helen cause. All with the kind advice and assistance of Barrie Ellis of OneSwitch.
